From Nov. 17-19, in Ilhabela (SP), Brazil, experts from several countries will be gathered to evaluate land use transitions in South America, aimed at the sustainable development. The Global Land Project Workshop (GLP) is organized by the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais - INPE) jointly with the International Geosphere–Biosphere Programme (IGBP).

In this Workshop will be announced the moving of the Global Land Project International Office (IPO) from Denmark to Brazil. Since January, 2012, the IPO will be based at INPE, in São José dos Campos (SP), Brazil. Also this will be the first IPO to be located in a country of the Southern Hemisphere.

The workshop aims to encourage the exchange of views on the consequences of global land transitions and to discuss public policies so that South American countries can combine economic growth, income distribution, and environmental sustainability. The presentations will address modeling and data analysis, ecosystems adaptation, Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), environmental services, among other topics.

INPE’s General Director, Gilberto Câmara, a GLP SSC member and articulator of GLP installation in Brazil, will present the results of Amazon monitoring, which has been carried out by INPE for over two years. Also he will talk about the relation between land use and food security.

The coordinator of the INPE’s Amazonia Program, Dalton Valeriano, will address the resilience of forests to climate variability and its vulnerability to human occupation. Bernardo Rudorff, Ana Paula Aguiar, Patrícia Pinho e Roberto Araújo, INPE’s experts, are among the speakers of this event, which also brings together scientists from other institutes and universities in Brazil and abroad. Created to study interaction between humans and terrestrial environment, the Global Land Project (GLP) is a joint research agenda of International Geosphere–Biosphere Programme (IGBP), which has a regional Office at INPE, and International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP).

The International Office (IPO) moving to INPE shows the increasing Brazil’s importance and the global science community recognition of its kind of research.
