The Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Association (GSDI), which brings together scientists, experts, agencies and companies that promote the international development of spatial data infrastructures, has chosen Gilberto Câmara, Director of the Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais – INPE), to receive the “Global Citizen Award”.

The award will be presented at the Global Geospatial Conference 2012, to take place in Quebec, Canada, May 14-17.

“I would like to share this award with all employees at INPE. The policy of providing data, software and products free of charge is now a corporate brand, adopted in every area of the Institute.  We are recognized in Brazil and abroad for our transparency. The award represents a victory for us,” said Gilberto Câmara.

Profile

Director of INPE since December 2005, Gilberto Câmara joined the institution in 1980. Graduated in Electronic Engineering from Aeronautics Technology Institute (Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica – ITA), also Master’s Degree and PhD in Computer Science for INPE. As leader of R&D in GIS and Image Processing at INPE, participated in the development of major remote sensing  and satellite image processing software, also projects such as DETER and PRODES, which have been monitoring Amazon.

Responsible for establishing a policy of free access to INPE’s data on deforestation and to the images of CBERS satellites (Brazil project with China), Gilberto Câmara has become known for defending the global distribution of medium resolution satellite data.

Gilberto Câmara is also a professor of INPE’s graduate programs in Applied Computer Science and Earth System Science. Further information about his curriculum, lectures and work presentations are under http://www.dpi.inpe.br/gilberto/
