Seminar on Climate, Dynamics
and Biodiversity in the Amazon

Thursday, June 21, 2012

The Seminar on Climate Dynamics and Biodiversity of Amazonian Forests will take place from June 25 to 28, at the Amazon Regional Center of the Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais - INPE), in Belém (PA).

Conducted in partnership with Embrapa Amazônia Oriental, the event aims to integrate research groups in biodiversity, carbon balance and climate in the region of oil palm production; analyze models of land occupation and propose further research to support public policies, gathering nationally and internationally renowned experts.

According to the seminar organizers, the expansion of oil palm in Amazon deforested areas is an alternative to expand and diversify Brazilian energy sources, placing the country in a prominent international position.

Pará State is already responsible for 95% of national production of oil palm, but the expansion is projected to raise from 150,000 hectares to 500,000 hectares. The challenge is to deploy a sustainable oil palm cultivation that include small, medium, and large producers, generating jobs and income for local people as well.

The event program includes technical seminar, short course and site visits to companies producing oil palm in Pará and to areas of family farmers.
